First date and at a loss for words? Date over.

Save the forced conversation dates I.E. dinner, walks, etc for later and do something interactive that you can focus the conversation on. You can build a rapport and get to know the person. Then you'll have more things to talk about next time.
Stop trying to impress with things that you aren't or things you think you like or are interesting to her, and be yourself enjoying the things you enjoy. If it's going to fail it will either way.

A little truth or dare usually gets things going. Or ends the date abruptly, depending.

no way.... why not do something together?

Yeah, that's a tough one. Sometimes talking about music helps for me, since it's a interest of mine and most people have some preferences they enjoy discussing. 🙂
I think that's the whole key, when things seem to be too quiet, bring up your interests. Cause if the conversation has died. Trying harder to be cool or what you think she's Gona like will usually be a big tell. A silent moment can have other options too. Compliments, a wine selection, desert?

@JoanieNewHampshire: When one is shy, it's generally about getting comfortable enough to speak freely. With most of my friends, etc. as well as my late husband it was first a question of breaking the ice (for me). Then we find out whether or not we're compatible. 😅
@bijouxbroussard: I just got quiet....... Nope! Lol, I can understand that, shy did tend to only be the need to find a comfortable place from which to relax and speak freely for me as well
