Ever known anyone you loved but knew you could not trust?

Not just a lover, but close friends you've known a long time, maybe all or most of your life.

I know a lot of such people. I can think of three people I know of whom I am very fond--but I know I cannot trust them at all, in any serious way.

In today's language, I think they call this situation "frenemies."

In each case, I am genuinely fond of the person and in each case I have known this person for a long time; 68 years, 42 years and 33 years. All three are women.

The worst part is that I would never, ever want to break up these relationships. Because I do like them and also because...these people scare me! And I don't know how they'd take rejection; not well at all, I think.

You should put some distance between you and these frenemies. Nobody needs frenemies in their lives. Forget them if you don't trust them.

As I said, I believe my life would be in real danger if I "forgot" them. There is already distance since I moved out to the desert. My mother's cult group are very powerful and they want me to stay in touch with these people. It's probably safer for me if I do.
