Do opposites (still) attract?

We list our likes, interests etc on social media and dating sites to find like-minded people though, right? We would usually dismiss/ignore/swipe past people we don't have a lot in common with.

I don't know when that saying first came about but I don't think there's as much truth in it anymore 馃

I think there could be different meanings to the word "opposites".
If you mean "opposite interests", then I can't envision any deep connection or attraction between people having different values in life.
I think that expression came to life quite a while ago, when people weren't used to paying attention to psychology and were simply judging by the appearance.
I do believe that there is a deep evolution-supported attraction between people with different physical qualities. Such unions promote greater gene diversity and create healthier offspring.

Interesting. I was going to mention physical opposites but thought the question was long enough as it is! I also totally thought that said 'unicorns' at first.

My gf and I are quite contrasting I suppose, I wonder if subconciously that was a factor.

@chubbyem: I guess, it depends on why you're looking at people. If you're looking for a life partner, the difference in values is a relation killer.
But as you mentioned in another comment, if you're looking for a friend, it's easy to make a mistake dismissing people based on a few comments on social media

@chubbyem: in case of you and your gf, do you share similar values ?

@har7070: Broadly, although our personalities are a bit different. I do think the traits we don't share compliment eachother though. I tend to worry and over think tasks and things that are required of me, she will rationalize and reassure. And I am better with people and emotions. We're both introverted but I don't worry about what people think of me, and that's something that she worries about.

@har7070: if you are looking for a life partner differences can attract not be a relation killer. In differences we might find interests we never knew we had.
