How understanding would you be if someone dropped your friendship because they developed feels for you that you could not reciprocate?

A former male best friend of mines dropped me as a friend because of his feelings for me smh. I had to cut him off too. I think when you keep a friend you have deep feelings for around, it creates resentment.
