Well, if being around me is going to cause my friend way more pain than it's worth, I'd want them to step back. But I'd also want to know why rather than have a friend just mysteriously ditch.

Well of course. We'd not want to hurt anyone by being with us.
But still. You'd not feel anything for yourself about the situation?

Oh I'd be angry and heartbroken but deep down I'd get it. Particularly since it would likely have to be a pretty deep friendship to get to the point of unreciprocatable feels.

@Aidolovemostofyourthoughts: Wait is this actually happening to you now?

SW-User
@KingofPizza: Nooo, not right now. But it has happened. And sometimes it still makes me angry at how things went. And then there is a conflict because I also understand.

@Aidolovemostofyourthoughts: Ah. Well, the nice thing about us humans being messy creatures is that we can hold seemingly conflicting emotions together in our minds and hearts. So "I get it but go fuck yourself" is totally a reasonable response on your part. :p

SW-User
@KingofPizza: Wahahaha! Lol you just know it! :D

@Aidolovemostofyourthoughts: And really it's a reasonable response to anything, if you justify hard enough. :p

SW-User
@KingofPizza: And justify I shall! :D
