Is time apart a good idea?

I love him and his kisses, hugs, jokes, smile and so forth. But he can be very selfish and neglectful at time and I just told him this. So we got into an argument and he said he would change but I said that it might not be enough, because he usually is all talk. Would some time away from each other be good or the opposite? I really like this guy and I wanna be with him for the long run and so does he but he is very bad at relationships.
