Isn't sometimes just better not to tell the truth or lie by omission?

Sometimes the truth causes nothing but suffering. Like, if one cheated on their wife a long time ago and no one but them is aware of it. Shouldn't they just keep it a secret?

That's sort of true but keeping the truth also hurts oneself so... I suppose it just depends on the person and the situation.
