Online dating in rural area ?

Last year, I tried online dating for the first time ever. It didn’t go well – no success at all. Throughout my life, I’ve received a few compliments from girls saying that I look good, so I really hope the issue was with the bad photos I used.
I’m planning to give it another shot soon. This time, I want to buy some new clothes, hire a professional photographer, and get a few great pictures taken. However, there’s one challenge: I live in the countryside. The nearest big city is about 1.5 hours away by car, and it has a population of around 90,000 people.
Do you think all of this effort will be worth it, considering the area I live in? What about upgrading to premium and changing my location say to that city? Could that make a difference? I really do not want to spend few hundreds of dollars and eventually find out that it was unnecessary..
