How do you let a friend down gently who wants to be in a relationship when you aren't ready?

Impossible, the person will feel terrible no matter what and the friendship itself will be affected negatively.

There's really not a gentle way to put it and it's not your fault. Is it your fault you don't have those kinds of feelings for him? No, it's simply the way it is and by prolonging being direct you'll just harm him more. Time cures all love troubles he'll get over you:)
