It's a one way ticket to destroying your self confidence and self esteem. There are too many time wasters, players, people looking for an ego boost who have no intention of actually striking up a conversation or dating.
Looks matter online and if you are just an average guy (obviously can't comment for women) then it doesn't matter how polite, well meaning or genuine you are, in my experience, you just get ignored. Or the odd time you do start to speak, you get cut off dead for no real reason.
For me, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have no real social life so online is the only option, but comes at a price.
