Do all woman need empathy for seemingly stupid things?

So my friend comes over, wants to go out shopping. Its 6pm here, on Xmas Eve, but I say OK I will go. So we start off, she checks her phone and the place she wants to go is closing at 6pm, so we can't go there.

She gets upset and says her day is ruined now because she can't look for the sweater she wanted. She obviously wants me to commiserate and tell her how bad I feel for her. I just can't though, nothing about this to me elicits a need for a real emotion. Oh yea it sucks the store is closed, so what? Move on.

I am now, however, a huge jerk and got a shitty attitude from her the rest of the night because of this. How do people fake this crap?

The thing is that sometimes you should just stop and look at her, perhaps blink. You may think about something else while pretending to listen. Your problem is that you think you need to fix everything: her sadness, the shop's opening times, her attitute... let her complain and she'll get over it by herself.

@Kunstner: I have been trying to fix that about myself. I do know I am a "fixer" and sometimes I get frustrated when I am given problems I cannot fix, when in reality they just want to talk about the problem.

Once you are my age, you will be able to sleep with your eyes open and you do that often. So things will fix itself.
