No, they don't have to be. I knew my husband as a friend before we went out with each other and he grew to be my best friend as we got to know each other better.
@JimFarris16 Yes, I can understand. It might ruin that relationship if you date and find out that's not the kind of relationship you want. It's hard to go back to what you had then.
