Why do so many people die of pneumonia?

There is viral originated pneumonia and bacterially originated pneumonia. Pneumonia is the resultant condition. In otherwise healthy people, antibiotics usually provide a complete cure.

There is no "cure" for viral pneumonia - the body's immune system deals with it. If you have comorbidities, or are elderly with a compromised immune system, it is usually fatal.
