Yes, before the internet and cell phones had video chats or the ability to attach selfies...
Back then, people exaggerated how they described themselves a lot.. but it mostly seemed to work out..
I had a lot of rules for first dates (face-to-face meetings) to eliminate game players and want-to-bees that were on the fence and not serious about dating.. That eliminated most of the liars...
Now-a-days, with selfies and video chats, no one can hide very much unless they are too shy..
But as for true blind dates, where someone surprises you by bringing alone a date and does not discuss it with you... Those never seemed to work out for me.. I'm too open and honest for the type of person who tries to just show up for a date.. I'm polite and respectful, but very demanding.. They always run and hide..
