Do you think it’s possible to be friends with someone you were once in love with?

How do you know if you’re being a mature adult about a situation? Or when you’re just being taken advantage of?

I have a long time friendship with my first love. It took a few years for me to be able to resume a friendship with him, but I realize that he wasn't a terrible person, and we've both grown and changed a lot since then.
