It was amazing, i'll never forget it. I was shaking inside with excitement. We were both 11 and the best thing was that other boys thought girls were yuck so there was no competition and our parents assumed that we were too young to be interested so we weren't constantly monitored. By contrast my teen years were frustrating and a disappointment.

@traceavery Thanks! yes, what i found in my teens was that i couldn't just be interested in someone and take my time, if it wasn't trying to talk to a girl without 4 guys pushing their way in, it was my parents or her parents all trying to get involved. It all made me realise how special the time i had when i was 11 was.
