When I was in high school, the very first guy I ever dated from my age of 14, had learning difficulties. Although appearing quite normal in any social setting, his academic ability functioned at what I'll call a grade 5 level. He was excellent at sports and phys ed, but he could not construct a sentence nor read a line without assistance, even if he was reading a comic book. He attended special classes within our high school, which were classes aimed specifically at people whom had flunked a year or simply had no desire to learn, but those special ed programs were never intended for someone like my boyfriend. Instead of holding him back and taking the time to teach him something, every teacher would 'pass' him along the way until he ended up at the peak of his own incompetency the day he started his first year of high school .[/c]
