what are some good things to talk about?

what are some good things to talk about when you meet a person and you want to be friends? i run out of things to say to them then i dont see them again. i rarely have the opportunity to see people more then once when i have the chance to meet new people and i dont know how to keep the conversation going long enough with out asking questions over and over. assuming there are no talking points, like you meet on the street and nothing in common until you know more about them.
