What are your thoughts on someone responding poorly after you gently turn him or her down for a relationship?

They start insulting you and boasting of all the dating prospects they have lined up.

I would wonder why they were so upset if I was just one of many good prospects. I would figure that they were probably lying, shrug it off, and move on.
