Are you, or were you at one time, damaged goods?

Baggage aside, I'm talking about something that left long-term psychological damage.

What happened?

What have you done, or had to do, to recover?

Was 'recovery' ever even possible?

I am damaged emotionally and mentally due to being abused as a child and then my first wife making it much worse as I felt I was almost over it. Didn't have any counselling to help at the time and the counselling I did have when I went was not helpful.

@gmatthewb Oh my goodness, that must have been unbearable to start with, and then to have your wife amplify the damage you suffered from your childhood abuse traumas...? I am curious how or what made the counselling you received unhelpful.

@shaelan The doctors I talked with just wanted to give me pills that didn't fix anything but had uncomfortable side effects as well as telling me that the solution is me leaving my ex wife (which I did and wanted to anyway) or that my troubles are really because I didn't grieve enough when my grandmother passed away, which really didn't have anything to do with my problem at all.

@gmatthewb I can see doctors favoring a pill over a coping mechanism. Hope you didn't get too caught up in those side-effects and even though leaving your wife was a good move and all, that's too bad how the counsellor or doctor latched onto unresolved grief as the cause of your troubles.

@shaelan Has made me less hopeful that I will find a doctor that might actually be able to help. But I am going to try again after my wife passes away, I'm going to need help then.

@gmatthewb wouldn't a counsellor be able to offer more in the way of therapy as compared to a doctor?
gmatthewb · 51-55, M
@shaelan Just using "doctor" as a general term for physiatrist, counsellor and so forth.

@gmatthewb Ohh, okay. I hope the very best for you in the future.

@shaelan Thank you
