Would you date someone considerably less intelligent than yourself?

To some extent, yes.

I wouldn't date someone who was intellectually disabled or whose level of intelligence limited them in some fairly serious ways. Mostly because there's the issue of consent and also that I think it'd be difficult to relate to that person on a deep level that's needed for a healthy relationship.

But, with that caveat in mind, I think that I would date someone less intelligent than me, even considerably so. There are a lot of qualities in a romantic partner that are more important than intelligence, like compassion, understanding, respect, shared activities, etc. Sometimes I think people, especially smart people, overestimate the value of their level of intelligence.
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@Zoeoz Agreed. Even "intellectual disability" is kind of misleading.

Like, people with dyslexia still understand consent.

But I understand the spirit of what you're saying: that compromised decision making is a concern.

My stance is that there's a lot of diversity in human experience, and if two consenting adults are comparable, that diversity is healthy.
Zoeoz · 31-35, F
@YourBuddyRandall By intellectual disability, I mean mental retardation. At some point, I guess, the APA changed the proper term to "intellectually disabled."

I think we agree with each other. If two adults are compatible with each other, then they shouldn't fret over a disparity between their IQ scores.

I guess I'm envisioning a scenario where if I were on a date with someone very, very "slow," it might be hard for us to find common conversation topics of interest or to relate to each other's life experiences. Not that it'd be totally impossible, just that it wouldn't be very conducive to a romantic relationship.

I guess, intelligence matters to some extent, but not to a great extent.
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@Zoeoz Yeah. I wasn't arguing with you as much as I was just defining terms. We agree.

You're a pretty smart cookie, I reckon. 👍️
Effloresce · 26-30, F
Yes if they were caring and funny

You gotta answer 😂😂@YourBuddyRandall

Kind of depends on what you mean by "less intelligent." I dated a guy with aspergers before, who was extremely intelligent in some areas and not-so-smart in other areas. I wouldn't date a person who was significantly mentally disabled, if that's what you're getting at. Otherwise I don't care.
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@melovemycats my intent was to leave it open to interpretation.

I've had a similar experience in dating

I also have slight difficulties with spatial reasoning, but am considered intelligent by most, as I'm reasonably articulate.

Mostly, I just want to get a read on how people view "intelligence".
Platoscave · F
I never did and I'm still single, heh!!
th3r0n · 41-45, M
That really doesn't count too many people out, if I were not willing to date someone less intelligent than me, I would probably have a few thousand women in the world to choose from Total. Considering that I have not been able to find a wife as it is, I don't find it feasible to disqualify nearly every woman alive, as long as she values my intelligence and caring, I'm perfectly fine with finding value in her sincerity and affections.

As much as I really do enjoy intelligent conversation, simple conversations can be meaningful also if there is depth and sincerity behind them.

@silmarilion456 not so much, Superior genes are generally dominant. If I married a very pretty woman that was very healthy but had average intelligence, the children would most likely be healthy and intelligent and beautiful.
I just did! Lol oopps...i don't how to gauge intelligence though. Bec i know I'm more intelligent than my partner in other things and on the other hand, he is also smarter than me when it comes to other stuff. So what i lack he compensates for it, vice versa
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
Considerably? No. Being a good conversation partner is an important part of a relationship to me.

Probably. I wouldn’t necessarily realize or believe that they were. As I was discussing with someone earlier, there are many different kinds of intelligence. But a kind heart, mutual respect and regard are so much more valuable. 😊
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard indisputably! 👍️
SW-User
Considering I’m not all that intelligent myself, “considerably” would make that person practically comatose. 🤔 So no.
Eternity · 26-30, M
No. I love the idea of responsible reproduction. The world doesnt need anymore functional dipshits.
I want someone with similar or complementary types of intelligence as me.
Hell yeah! Easy and cheap date. McDonald's and Motel 6
ahhh -- dumb chicks, the best you can get 😌
SW-User
No I am very much attracted to intelligence.
SW-User
I like to be challenged so no. I would prefer somebody more passive than me though.
SW-User
@YourBuddyRandall nuuu but I'm not stubborn. I always take ideas from people and mix it with my own, but I prefer to lead
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@SW-User That's awesome. I'm just saying that maybe having another leader in your corner might not be a bad thing. Who knows!
SW-User
@YourBuddyRandall yeah I've thought about it, but so far I like being in charge more. it could be nice for certain things. people take lead naturally in different things, so I most likely won't be leading everything
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I don't think intelligence is a yes/no question, but I'd need someone I could have an interesting conversation with.

and I've never met a dumb person with a great sense of wit.
SW-User
I've never met anyone that really matches that description so it's hard to say. The majority of the people I meet are at least as intelligent as I am, in different ways.

Probably not. Our conversations would be quite boring.
@SW-User conversations-----lol what a woman.

No. I can't hold someone's hand through life as they tag behind. I need to walk beside someone through the thick of it
🤔 Let me do an IQ test and I'll get back to you on that. If I'm above average I'll say sure, if not well...I don't want to date a brick :/
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
If they were funny
Goralski · 51-55, M
Like somebody with downs syndrome
Goralski · 51-55, M
@MarmeeMarch no we don't
@Goralski The ones I met did -
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@Goralski People with Downs aren't necessarily unintelligent. The point of my post was to discuss compatibility, not single out groups of people.
saintsong · 41-45, F
I am not that intelligent, so they would be stupid.

@silmarilion456 What can I say I'm a simple woman, any more simple minded and they would be like a single cell organism.
Sort of a last resort thing for me

Sure but it would be hard to find
