Do you believe that marriage works?

I don't! My parents will be married for 20 years next year and I swear their marriage only works when my dad works away and is only home on the weekends. It's a toxic relationship and I think they'll never break it off because they both seem to be afraid of being alone

A marriage can only work with two independent people who CHOOSE to be together. As you state they are afraid to be alone. That is dependency and in those cases neither is happy theyhave rather settled.
