When you care about someone

Do you find that you care less about that person if the caring is not reciprocated?
If the person is emotionally unavailable or just doesn’t seem to have the emotional intelligence to care about someone other than themselves - are you able to stop caring about them?
Is it all the caring just a waste of time?

I sometimes find myself wondering why, especially if they seemed to care for a long time and then suddenly changed. And, ironically, this sometimes makes me think about them even more.

I liked what BlueMuse said about giving without the expectation of getting anything back. I think I used to be able to do that, but something happened to me last year, when I was struggling and found myself in need of some support. When someone gives you lots of support, for a long time, and then suddenly withdraws it, that can really leave a person bewildered, and it can take a long time to let that go.

Having said that, I don't know if the caring is a waste of time or not. I think that remains to be seen.
