Can a best man be a woman?

My best friend is a woman and I want her to be by my side during my wedding.

I've seen it done. One of my friends had a Best Lady and two groomswomen. Another friend getting married next year is having a few bridesdudes.

They cannot. The word 'man' gives it away!!
