What's so Difficult?

My wife and I just found out that we're having a little one, our first, in the spring. We're in our late twenties (her 26, me 27) and when she had her first doctor visit a couple of weeks ago, and he made me weep for the future of mankind.

My wife and I have been together 5 years total (that's dating, engaged, and married) and it surprised the hell out of the doctor to hear that. He even asked her if her and I had ever parted temporarily then got back together at all during those 5 years. We haven't, by the way.

Why is it so hard for people today to just be with one person? Both my wife and I dated numerous people before we met, but once we started dating, we've been together ever since and don't ever want to be with anyone else. So, is it plausible for two people in contemporary times to stay in love with one another, and only with one another? Yes, it is!
