@Flenflyys He could then sue you for the money. An engagement ring is a contract for marriage. If the engagement is broken the ring must be returned, by law. At least in the US that is.

You're in Canada right? If so you're not entirely correct. While there is no direct legislation outlining ownership of an engagement ring in the event that the marriage does not occur; there is significant case law where the ring was ultimately ordered returned.
