Thinking about leaving a positive pregnancy test out for my partner to find to kind of tell him without telling him... opinions?

Wow... do you actually acre about him? If so, then this is the kind of thing that you should tell him, obviously. Unless you two been trying to get you pregnant and he'll enjoy the surprise. But it sounds like that is not the case
