Another guy proposed to me and my boyfriend told me to say no to him?

So I was just with this other guy, and my boyfriend knew that I was going to hang out with this other guy, and then at dinner, this guy proposed to me, and I was so shocked, so I texted my boyfriend and he said just say no? Why did my boyfriend say that?
