I'm pretty young in the marriage world, but I did have an encounter with a little old man one day at a gas pump that gave me some insight!
He was there with his wife and they were in their 70's. He got out of the car, walked around and opened her door for her and as she walked inside to pay he came around and between our cars we exchanged a pleasant greeting.
I said something about how chivalry wasn't dead and he said they had been married for 47 years! I, like every other sane person, asked the only question anyone asks in this instance: HOW DO YOU DO IT?
He said that the first mistake we make these days is to assume that if you're not absurdly, drunkenly happy all the time then obviously there's something better out there and the second is that we don't accept responsibility like we should. You have to wake up every day and remind yourself that this is a choice. You choose to love and respect this person, you choose to seek to improve yourselves together rather than watching your partner fall behind, you have to learn to be honest and to allow them their righteous anger when you make mistakes.
You have to wake up and choose them, every single day.
