It's an actual relationship in the sense that it's a maintained interaction between two people. And that can work if that's all you want it to be. If you wanted something more, something physical, intimate, and exclusive, then no. I would think that's very rare. Long-distance romances most often fail if they go on longer than a few months. If you want a lasting, intimate relationship, you're much more likely to succeed if you close that distance after a month or two.
