Humans are by large not privy to their true motivations, this is espacially adequate when it comes to love. Love as an emotion in the brain manifests in the limbic system, dating older than all other emotions in terms of evolution. Love, trust and fear are the only feelings that happen stimultanoualy with manifestations in the body. Other feelings take longer to manifestate outside the brain. So it has a far stronger impact and different physical mechanisms.
I believe that everything has physical causes. The purposes that come later on are assigned by us.
It is better to admit that there is no necessary cosmic fate for love to take place so one is more realistic about its imperfections.
We work hard to achieve it , to grow and accept other people's flaws as a result of seeing love realistically. We give up and move on to another when our idealistic dreams are never met.

I'd like to believe in it, but it seems like just something people tell themselves to feel better about their choice in partner.

It sure seems like it’s possible. However, it takes tremendous maturity, time and luck to find such a person.
