how can you tell if someone likes you?

i'm not sure what to feel half of the time. my friends tell me that someone might be interested in me and that they notice them being into me and that i should approach them about it. however, i don't see the "attraction" that they talk about

They have to tell me that they like me. Or I would naturally assume that they hate me or are spending time with me because they want something from me
