IMO little paint and lots of varnished (polyurethane) wood. Paint for accents. Pick up the wood tones accented on the outside in the patio roof and window flower box.
My home now is yellow with green trim and when I was 24 my home was yellow with brown trim (I didn't like that look) we ended up repainted the trim and sold that house for a profit anyways.
Now that I'm older, I've gotten lazier and things have gotten a shit ton more expensive. I don't think I'll ever finish the remodel on my 200 year home.

The accent color be cream, sage or whatever. Ive seen people match it to their outside sliding of their home. Add some bold brass statement piece like floor lamps brass frames, nicknacks and boom. You have a show piece room
