When did 'husband' and 'wife' become bad words?

I understand the terms disclose the the sex of the other spouse in the relationship, and therefore the sexual orientation of the couple. I'm ok with it. I don't feel the need to be so ambiguous about it.

My wife passed away last year, but she will always be my wife. To refer to her as my partner only represents part of the whole picture.

When out culture and society started to slowly turn away from it back in the 60s and 70s . I think having two very liberal united States presidents also made a big influence . A lot of consequences came from it .

@Atari2678 a lot of it these days has to do with the degree to which the LGBTQ is still struggling for acceptance. There are a lot of people who will still treat them unfairly if their sexuality is discovered, so if a woman mentions her wife, things could go bad for her in certain situations, like at work. ..saying partner is just as much of a tell if were not all saying it when we refer to our husbands or wives. ..and now that it's gaining ground, it's those of us who maintain the tradition of proper labels, we're becoming the ones who get ostracized for our beliefs and ways of life

They aren't. Some people choose to say partner that's all.

@JimboSaturn I know gay men who use husband. It's all your choice.
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@JimboSaturn of course there are many , probably most people in same sex marriages are secure enough and proud enough to use the words husband and wife respectively. There are probably times when they might want to use the word partner just to keep their situation ambiguous.

Regardless, I know it's a choice, however, there is a shift occurring and I've been politely corrected a couple times for referring to my wife as my wife. I was told it's oppressive and implies ownership.

My opinion is that it it's the word mine that implies ownership, but it also implies belonging , not to mention, my is also used when talking about partners and spouses and Families and offspring. The English language is hard enough to understand as it is. We don't need to be cherry picking when words mean what they mean and until they mean something else on certain occasions only

I'm sure that no-one sane will take away liberty of thought and speach in whatever way. Otherwise, we're back at democracy ancient Athenian-style; the few deciding for the many.

@val70 yea, but are we talking about sane people here? When insanity becomes the norm, the sane will be considered insane and out voted.

Have you heard about what they've been doing in the UK? Tens of thousands of individuals have been arrested or charged in recent years over online communications and social media posts.
val70 · 56-60
@Jayciedubb Yes, that's bad. During five years out of the 62,199 total arrests, 18,510 individuals were charged, and 12,292 were convicted.

@val70 that's ridiculous! Meanwhile the pido gets the keys to the castle. But then again, he never really talked about it, so I guess I see the logic. LOL😒😏 seriously though. Those kind of numbers are ridiculous. Maybe they're trying to catch up with us with the incarceration rate.

I am sorry for your loss and I totally agree with you. My wife is my wife. I will never introduce her as my partner.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@Jayciedubb All this new politically correct crap is for the bird's! I'm like you. She is my wife and I say yes dear. Lol!!!
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@Musicman ...and we both wear pants
Musicman · 61-69, M
@Jayciedubb Exactly!
