In today's world where it takes two paychecks to just survive and looking at the chaos any child is likely to have to grow up in, perfectly understandable imho.
Never a question with me. My late wife came with a 4-year old son, so I became both simultaneously. And it actually was sufficient for me, but my mother-in-law kept beating on my wife that we had to have another child because "I would want one of my own" . So we capitulated (although we couldn't really afford another at the time), and then mother-in-law constantly complained because she thought I favored him over the first child.
My two sons -- we raised them as if both were mine -- split when it came to having children. One did, one didn't.
