Snow Camp 12/26-30/1963
People ask how I met my husband. Here is our story that started over 61 years ago.
Our youth group at church combined with our sister church for a youth retreat in Minnesota Dec 26-30, 1963. I was looking forward to it but had no idea it would change my life forever. I was eager to go to be with my friends instead of sitting home doing nothing but watching TV.
12/26 at 6 AM I boarded the bus at our sister church. I was sitting between a girl friend and her sister. Others were boarding the bus and I noticed this one guy. He was wearing a parka sweatshirt jeans and combat boots. I thought how much I would like to meet him but as shy as I was that wasn't something that I would make happen. So I just figured that was a dream that never would happen.
He sat down two rows behind me on the opposite side of the bus waded up his parka for a pillow and as we left he settled down for a nap. A couple hours later I felt a tap on my shoulder. The guy sitting behind me pointed to the guy I noticed and said he wanted to know my name. I think my heart skipped a beat as I couldn't believe it was happening. So I told him.
There were a few more questions before they switched seats and I was talking to him face to face. I was turned in My seat to talk to him. Out of the blue he touched the palm of my hand and I grabbed his hand. I couldn't believe my dream was coming true.
After about an hour we stopped for fuel and a restroom break. I didn't know how to act when he wanted to buy my snacks so I refused. But the rest of the trip we were talking and holding hands.
The next morning we got together the first thing. That morning was met with another guy hanging around and making passes at me. Finally the guy I was crazy about told me that if I was was interested in the other guy fine but if I was interested in him that I need to tell the other guy to get lost. Being very shy it was difficult for me but I told the other guy that I wasn't interested in him.
The rest of the time we spent every waking hour together. He had his trumpet with him and I played the piano. We ended up playing at one of the meetings. The waking hours flew by.
The trip home we were in the same seat snuggled up with each other. It was such a wonderful time and still going on 61+ years later.
