Why even bother?

I feel like when I talk, he doesn't really listen to me. I mean, really listen so I stopped trying to talk to him about anything important.

Sounds like a good start. Pull away a little bit (conversationally), then, after a while try talking about something impórtant. If he has a brain, hopefully he will have learned his lesson.
