I think it depicts a spouse as a burden. I never said "the", ... always "my".
On the other side of the coin, many women will take offense at "MY" and scold the husband with "you don't own me".
The moral of the story: marriage / relationship is often a no win situation. 🤷 Who needs it?

@RogueLodyte wellll, I don’t own my mother either - she’s dead in fact - but she’s still a mother belonging to me. And I’d equally say my husband even though don’t own him either. Whoever sees it as ownership really needs to get a life. lol

I have already had women reprimand me for saying "my" girlfriend or "my" wife and that I didn't own them. 🙄🙄🙄
AND I am acquainted with one in present day life that would DEFINITELY take offense if I called her "my" girlfriend if we were in that status. I would have to introduce her as MS _____...or ELSE. I would be nagged and reminded of it for years.
