Why do people look down on this? Some people thrive in relationships like this. It can be extremely therapeutic and helpful to someone's well-being.

I think on both sides, those within these relationships and those without, there are significant amounts of people that don't understand the difference between dominance/ submission and use/abuse. There are a lot of people that claim to be in the lifestyle that are actually just doing the use/abuse thing. And then people outside the lifestyle don't really see or hear about much that isn't the use/abuse thing. Largely because the happy folks in the lifestyle tend to keep it private. And the ones who don't are written off as kinksters trying to push their fetish on others.
