admitted to being a sadist. He seems well-rounded & respectful otherwise. Red flag, no?
I mean at least he was honest & direct about it.
I dunno why I keep attracting those types tbh.

It's not a red flag if he can respect your boundaries and keeps it in the bedroom. If anything it's a green flag because people who are actually controlling would never admit to something like that.
