technically, hair color is made of a mix of two types of melanin called eumelanin and pheomelanin.
eumelanin comes in two pigment colors: black or brown. phomelanin is a red pigment.
blonde people have very little of any of those pigments, red haired people have more phomelanin than eumelanin, brunettes have more brown eumelanin pigment than the other types, dark brunettes have a mix of brown and black eumelanin, and so it's totally possible to have predominately black eumelanin and therefore truly black hair.
