If a man is uncomfortable around his wife's friends and family isn't that sometimes a sign he's a jealous and controlling husband?

I would probably draw a very clear line. It is not his place to criticize you never mind disrespecting you. A lot who suffer inferiority complex derive value from a dynamic of abuse masking it as superiority.

Is he controlling with his wife?

Pretty possible , she needs to take care of her own connections. It is her own responsibility. Some people are fine with living like that.

I'll answer with an anecdote. He doesn't like my sister spending money on books. She's a reader. He's not. I was at the mall with my sister when she bought a book at the bookstore. I said, "What is ---- going to say when he sees you bought a book?" She said, "He'll never find out. When I get home I plan to hide it under the bed!" 🤣 By the way, she's happy with him. She says "he's perfect! He's the perfect person!" To each her own!

Maybe he’s a controlling assfuck douchebag? I mean if she’s still free to see her family when she wants and friends then it’s more likely he just doesn’t like them. Because as said in other comment, most controllers will act charming around the family, and slowly switches shit around and the victim is left feeling like they are on outside of their life looking in
