I know two women who seem to find it works well, though maybe in those cases, it's not really open, per se. Both these women have a husband and a boyfriend and they share different parts of their lives with each.
I'll admit that I occasionallly wonder about the idea, but I very much doubt that I could make it work. I don't compartmentalize well.
Success, or not, depends very much on the people involved. Good communication is absolutely essential.
