Because they're greedy and want money for things which are free elsewhere. They also want you to pay for the brand because they think having a well known name like oxford means their dictionary is better than a free one, which it isn't, at least not enough to warrant a £10 a month subscription. I get you have expenses to pay but there are other ways to fund a website. Such basic knowledge shouldn't be monetized. Shame on you oxford and other paid dictionaries, you should be supporting the sharing of knowledge not trying to make an extra buck from it.
