"A letter always embodies the distance it must travel by coach, boat, train or plane...Even a letter's tactile quality is of the very essence of its journey through time and space. We still recognize- today more than ever perhaps- the preciousness of such freight rife with human destiny and suffused with the presence of the one who wrote it.... In the digital age, the rhythms of personal interactions have adapted to high-speed online communication and thus, to virtual simultaneity. Yet our accelerated modes of exchange have not brought relief from the pain of waiting.
