Carpetbaggers were northerners who came south and were seen as exploiting Reconstruction for profit, with the help of the scalawags. Carpetbaggers were called that because they used cheap luggage made from old rugs. Both terms were considered insulting.
Carpetbagger is still used today to refer to a politician who moves to an area he has no connection to just to run for office there, because he can鈥檛 win in the area he鈥檚 from.
