Just now finished reading the short story, Cold Equations

Written by Tom Godwin in 1954.
This was the saddest Sci-fi story I have ever read and by the end, tears were falling from my eyes.

The story is about a pilot named Barton that is flying a ship to planet Woden that needs supplies.
During the trip, Barton discovers a stowaway teenage girl. The teenage girl, Marilyn Cross, boarded the ship, even though she saw the warning, she thought she would only have to pay a fine.
There is a law that any stowaway found on an EDS is to be jettisoned into space because there is only a limited amount of fuel and the computer calculated the exact amount of fuel needed to make the trip for the exact amount of mass.
Marilyn boarded the ship to try to go see her brother, Gerry Cross. Much to Barton’s dismay, he was forced to jettison Marilyn out or everyone in the crew will die.

Imagine that, a young girl wants to see her brother so stows away on a space craft.
She has to die because her weight will see the spacecraft run out of fuel and 7 other people will die because of her wanting to be with her brother...

Twisted stories... are apparently not new to our century...

@Djc58 The best SF is human stories, set in a futuristic or space environment. Many of the classic authors were trainers mathematicians or engineers and wrote only after lengthy research and calculations, way before the first computers were created..😷

I know this story well. And it is about those impossible decisions that must be made..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Too sad for me. To have to jettison a girl to her death...

@Gusman To go all "Spock" on you. "The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few (or the one)"😷

An awful thesis but it would make more impact if it centred more credibly on the food supplies, not the fuel.

Once at "cruising speed" a spacecraft does not need its engines, and the stowaway would have made very little difference to the total mass anyway.

@ArishMell Exactly. Until the craft had to slow at its destination, which is what the plot dictated.I know the story well. The pilot notices a small error in the fuel usage on the accelleration phabe, tipping him off that the craft is overweight., which causes him to search. And the safety margin of extra fuel was already used at that point. I am sure the real numbers would never be quite that tight. But every kilo a ship carries is another kilo of fuel (approximately).😷
