Idk, I used to read 3 or 4 at a time. Sometimes your brain needs the variety.
Different authors have different styles and write about different topics. If I'm reading something heavy, I like to balance it out with something light or humorous. Sometimes I'll be interested in how-to books or compendiums which are kind of boring and need to balanced with some engaging fiction. Maybe I've been reading the same author or same genre for a while and need to break the monotony with someone or something new.
5 might be a bit much though. If I ever get to 5, that probably means I've given up on one of those books. I tend to want to finish what I start
