Vladimir Nabokov's taste for the absurd

I am reading Nabokov's Bend Sinister.

At one point, a poet and a philosopher are discussing some rather bizarre interpretations of Hamlet.

Regarding Ophelia:

She proved to be a kitchen wench too - but in the kitchen of a vegetarian.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean! 😂

I've only ever read Lolita - I've not attempted anything else. As former professional cook, I'm puzzled too by that quotation! 🤔
