Vladimir Nabokov's taste for the absurd

I am reading Nabokov's Bend Sinister.

At one point, a poet and a philosopher are discussing some rather bizarre interpretations of Hamlet.

Regarding Ophelia:

She proved to be a kitchen wench too - but in the kitchen of a vegetarian.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean! 😂

@Piper I am sure, from the context, that it is meant to be absurd nonsense. But am at a loss as to even the connotation the author has in mind! 😂

This book has made me laugh out loud quite a few times!

@Dignaga I think Pale Fire is one of the best books I have ever read.
